There's a lot of untamed forest and difficult
trails lower down, and as you go further up, you truly are all alone
in the mountains and there are some extremely demanding parts of
what goes for the trail. You truly must be able to hold your own
here - a landscape this stark and isolated requires as much mental
preparation as physical. The pay-off is an extraordinary sense of
calm, as well as proximity to and view of the entire Dhaulagiri
Himal and the sixth highest mountain in the world, Dhaulagiri I
(8,167 m). And, of course a sense of true extreme adventure. The
hardest part is crossing over into the Kali Gandaki Valley, which
is separated from the north and west of the Dhaulagiri massif by
over a dozen peaks higher than 7,000 m. Once you've managed that,
though, you'll be rewarded with the exceptionally pretty and hospitable
Thakali villages of Marpha and Tukuche, and hot springs furthre
down. You see trans-Himalayan culture at its most 'normal' - it
will feel you've got to a very cosmopoltitan town, after what you've
accomplished.
